Kayaking Lan Ha Bay features 3-day trip on a private wooden boat to discover Halong Bay, and to enjoy sea kayaking in Lan Ha Bay of Cat Ba National Park.
Halong Bay is a center of a large zone, which includes Bai Tu Long Bay to the northeast, and Lan Ha Bay to the southwest. These bays share similar geological, geographical, geomorphological, climate, and cultural characters.
Located in the far southern end of Halong archipelago, Lan Ha Bay is a water area of Cat Ba National Park. The bay is therefore extremely charming with abundant lagoons, small beaches and approximately 367 limestone islands.
To local specialists, Halong Bay became too familiar with tourist boats, while Lan Ha Bay is still limiting its list of visitors with few kayakers who come on small boats. This Kayaking Lan Ha Bay trip offers a private cruising, and good balance of cruising and kayaking in both Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay.
Day 1: Hanoi - Halong Bay/ Private Wooden Boat
After breakfast, we pick you up from your hotel lobby and drive out of Hanoi to Halong Bay, where you board your own private junk for your next two nights in this magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the natural marvels of Vietnam. We drive through the rich farmlands and different towns of the Red River Delta, observe everyday life of Vietnamese villagers working on their wet rice fields, taking pigs and chickens to the market on motorbikes, and plough the fields with their water buffaloes.
Arrive at the pier in the late morning, aboard our own boat and start cruising through limestone formations of the bay while lunch is being served. Some 989 of the islands of the islands in Halong have acquired their names as a result of interpretation of their unusual shapes; such names include Voi Islet (the elephant), Ga Choi Islet (the fighting cocks), Khi Islet (the monkey), and Mai Nha Islet (the roof). Birds and animals including bantams, antelopes, monkeys, and lizard also live on some of the islands.
We cruise straight to the hidden Dark and Bright Cave of Cat Ba National park in southwest of Halong, where we start kayaking and immersing into the great nature surrounding us. In this tranquil place of the National Park, you will glide through a dark cave to enter a lagoon behind. Kayakers sometime see our endemic primate called Cat Ba Langur on their sight. We’ll paddle for about 2 hours then head back to our boat, we continue on cruising to the anchorage spot to stay overnight. We have dinner on our boat. (L, D)
Day 2: Ho Ba Ham - Ba Trai Dao/ Full Day Kayaking
Today, we’ll cruise and kayak to discover Lan Ha Bay. Located to the southern end of Halong Bay and east of Cat Ba Island, Lan Ha Bay has long been famed for its unspoiled and magnificent natural beauty, and its intense concentration of pristine limestone mountains, which partition the open sea into smaller bays and gulfs. The Lan Ha archipelago covers an area of more than 7,000ha, of which 5,400ha is under the management of Cat Ba National Park. The waters here are home to hundreds of species of fish and marine life. Larger marine animals in the area include seals and even three species of dolphin. La Ha Bay features 139 beautiful, small and pristine sandy beaches, many of which lie between limestone islands. Indeed, on the first day of your cruise, you’ll have a chance to relax on one of them, the white sandy beach of Ho Ba Ham islets, where you can also swim and kayak in the azure-blue water off the beach.
After your breakfast, we cruise down to Ho Ba Ham (Three Tunnels Lakes) where we’ll kayak and have chance to swim in the clear and blue water. Ho Ba Ham is situated in the middle of a narrow, rectangular area, with the all four sides enclosed by vertical limestone cliffs. The lake comprises three wide and round pits, linked together by narrow and meandering tunnels. The silence is disturbed only by the sounds of the fishing boat’s oars. On the island are many species of plants such as orchids, figs, banyans and cycads, which blossom throughout the year. The area is also the home of yellow-haired monkeys, birds, flying squirrels and bats. After kayaking, we have lunch on boat while cruising to Ba Trai Dao (Three Peach Islands).
During our kayaking route this afternoon, enjoy pristine white and sandy beaches, rocky out crops and giant blue lagoons filled with labyrinth of limestone cliffs rising out of the ocean. Wildlife sightings are also frequently seen in this area, from golden-headed langur (Cat Ba Langur) to ospreys soaring over shorelines. This adventure in Lan Ha Bay is ideal for both experienced and novice paddlers. We cruise back to the overnight spot in the late afternoon. (B, L, D)
Day 3: Halong Bay - Hanoi
After breakfast, we’ll visit Sung Sot Cave (Cave of Surprises) - one of the most beautiful cave in Halong Bay. Sung Sot, about 30 meters high from the seawater, was formed by dissolution. Dissolution begins when acidic water reacts chemically to the limestone bedrock and being absorbed by the soil into the ground. On the way traveling down, acidic water keeps reacting chemically with calcium carbonate in the rock, which result a space. When the space becomes larger and larger the water can flow through, as it flows it erodes. Physical erosion washes away rock and sand then forms an underground stream. Finally over hundreds of thousands of years, the cave is formed. The more you walk to the inner chamber, the more surprise you feel with the limestone formations around you.
After all, we back onboard to cruise back to the harbor and be ready for our lunch. Upon our arrival back in the pier, a private car picks us up and drive back to Hanoi, finish our wonderful three days with legendary traditional junk in Halong Bay. (B, L)
