Hoi An, about 30km (20 miles) south of Danang City, is one of the most well-known attractions in Vietnam. This 400-year-old town features peaceful atmosphere with traditional houses, boutique shops and friendly people. The lovely ancient port town of Hoi An has gained much attention from global travelers, and made it to the list of 15 best tourism sites on earth.

For a second year in a row, Hoi An has been a familiar name in global rankings by readers of the New York based Travel + Leisure. According to the famous travel magazine, from being a small rural village where people earned living from fishing, Hoi An grew into the busiest trading port in the Southeast Asia in the 16th century, which is famous for ceramics and high-grade silk. The town today appeared to the global fame among the top travel destinations in Southeast Asia. Travelers find in this town some of unique distinctions such as slow pace and tranquil atmosphere, which have repeatedly been hailed year after year.

Travel + Leisure’s readers were asked to weigh in with travel experiences around the globe and share their opinions on the top cities, islands, airlines, hotels, cruise ships, spas and others. For cities, readers rate cities based on its landmarks, culture, cuisine, shopping experiences, friendliness of the local and the overall value.

For that said, Hoi An was also listed as one of the 16 best places in the world to relax and de-stress, ranked second in the list of the 10 safest and most exciting places on earth for solo travelers. On the list, we find Thailand’s Chiang Mai, Kyoto in Japan and Ubud in Indonesia as three other Southeast Asian cities.

Sitting on a little plastic stool in one of many cafes and relaxing with a glass of “bia hoi” - the locally brewed fresh beer, Tuan – a local rickshaw drivers shared his own view: “Motorbikes are banned from the town center, so a cyclo ride is an environmentally friendly as well as leisurely way to get around the yellow houses and old red-tiled roofs. That brought me more chances to serve travelers wanting an authentic travel experience and earn our livings, the more travelers the more prosperity for us”.

A long period of obscurity has actually helped the town retain its slow-moving pace and tranquility, which is hard to find in other major cities in Vietnam like Hanoi or Saigon. More than that, the town has recently rewarded for its efforts taken to preserve its centuries old dwellings as well as an ambience difficult to find elsewhere. It was the pioneering of exclusively pedestrian streets and the rejection of needless, “modern” conveniences like the cable car.

It is not surprising then, that Hoi An has now been chosen among the best places in the world to unwind. The number of visitors to Hoi An skyrocketed 70 percent in 2017 to 2.68 million in the first half of 2018, an official data shows.

Accommodation in Hoi An is surplus, Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai and Boutique Hoi An Resort are among the recommended beach front resorts. While the Anantara Hoi An Resort is a great choice for those who prefer a nearby hotel with river front views. There are so many things to do in the town too, such as walking and boat trip in the ancient town, making lantern, as well as participating in an authentic cooking class.
