The Khmer Rouge seized power in Cambodia after a civil war in 1975 with Pol Pot emerging as the communist regime's ruthless tyrant, which set about wiping out political opponents and ethnic minorities, with between 1.5 – 3 million people being massacred.
Today, casual travelers to Cambodia may not readily see signs of the tragedy brought on by the regime more than 40 years ago, but underneath Cambodia’s friendly veneer, the wounds still haunt the people. Meet a former soldier who was in his 20s when Pol Pot came to power, gain a personal perspective of the traffic past by spending some time with his family who lived through those tumultuous years. Over tea and local sweets with the family, listen as he recounts his strikingly real personal narrative filled with incredible highs and devastating lows, marked by adversity, survival and hope.
